A Practicum of Resilience: Split 2021
The exhibition featured a number of local communities of resilience and actionability.
Most often formed on the societal periphery, where they were nevertheless able to forge real and specific mechanisms of resilience. It is these kinds of communities that are able to perceive the future as a multitude of potential realities, but such that they are crucially participatory, inclusive, collective and horizontal, or lateral rather than hierarchical.
The exhibition showcased, for instance, several self-sustained nature-based communities, as well as organizations for the promotion of permaculture, amateur radio hosts and other community-supported media producers, and many others. Additionally, a number of public workshops aimed at a wide audience were held with the hopes of revitalizing certain skills which were at one time commonplace in our societies but have been almost entirely forgotten with the passage of time, or else skills that we deemed relevant to the overall project of fostering resilience and actionability. Among these, there were workshops relating to amateur radio broadcasting, natural food preservation methods with optimal energy efficiency, the production of electrical power via the repurposing of discarded/obsolete electrical equipment, bike repair shops, education about urban shock architecture and its potential in regard to crises, and even the importance of so-called ‘pirate care’ with respect to marginalized or disenfranchised communities.
